JANUARY 31, 2008:
SEMINAR: ENERGY IN TRANSITION - AN INTERNATIONAL PERSPECTIVE
Presented by The
Western Australian Trade & Investment Office in association
with the Houston
Technology Center
Details: A series of
seminars and panel discussions on educating the workforce of the future,
engineering aspects of alternate energy sources and hydrocarbon chemistry.
The world's annual energy consumption is approaching 13 trillion watts, most of
which is supplied in the form of fossil fuel hydrocarbons. This highly
interactive workshop brings together leading experts and industry stakeholders
to explore the challenges - and solutions - for transition from this
traditional hydrocarbon economy to an increasingly renewable energy
economy.
Panel 1
: Addressing the
Challenge of Human Capital
This panel will explore the education and
training needs required for a lower-carbon and bio-carbon energy future and how
they intersect with, and are complemented by, future staff development for the
oil and gas industry.
Panel
2: Harnessing the
Potential of Kinetic Energy
Traditional offshore engineering designs
structures which resist the kinetic energy present in the offshore environment.
This panel will explore how these same forces in the offshore (and onshore)
environments can be harnessed to generate renewable energy.
Panel 3 :
From Fossil Carbon
to Bio and Captured Carbon
A century of science and know-how has gone into
understanding what it takes to release the chemical energy of the fossil
derived hydrocarbon bond at global, commercial scale. This panel will examine
the possibility of renewable feedstock substitution into the global energy
supply chain, and explore how chemistry and chemical engineering will
contribute to commercializing new feedstocks ("Green Crude") and solving
the challenges of carbon capture and geo/bio-sequestration.
